The Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrates the legendary actress Barbara Stanwyck during the year of her centennial with an evening of film clips and onstage conversation with Stanwyck’s friends and colleagues. This tribute will be followed by a retrospective screening series at the UCLA Film & Television Archive’s new Billy Wilder Theater.

From her humble beginnings as a package wrap clerk at a local department store to becoming the world's most prized actress, Barbara Stanwyck realized her dream in show business beginning as a chorus girl and then moved up the ranks into acting roles in film.

Legendary screen star Judy Garland, a former resident of historic Whitley Heights, was featured on the big screen at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, having just been celebrated in her treasured classic The Wizard of Oz in July. This time, she is starred in the Oscar nominated motion picture A Star Is Born.

A new and remarkable history on the founder of Whitley Heights, Hobart Johnstone Whitley has been released and should shed some much-needed light on one of the key players who brought Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley to life.


The book, entitled The Father of Hollywood, details the stories and history of the visionary who was instrumental in the development of Hollywood and greater Los Angeles, and, of course, his neighborhood namesake – Whitley Heights.

So who exactly H.J. Whitley and how did he achieve the coveted title of The Father of Hollywood?

Residents included Marie Dressler, Leonard Bernstein & William Randolph Hearst. Actors include Marion Davies, Jean Harlow, Charlie Chaplin, Boris Karloff, Bella Lugosi, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Jean Harlow along with W.C. Fields, Greta Garbo, Barbara LaMarr & Norma Shearer.
