News: Preferential Parking Arrives in Whitley Heights

Preferential Parking SignsHave you seen the signs?!?

No, we're not talking extra-terrestrial. Think less 'Area 51' and more 'District 99'.

These are the signs for the new Preferential Parking District that the Los Angeles City Council has established for Whitley Heights. Take a look around the hill and you'll see them everywhere. The newly-installed Preferential Parking signs are now up and ready for enforcement.

So what are the signs and what do they mean? The first thing you need to know is...

... the new Preferential Parking District encompasses about 23 sections of the Whitley Heights Historic District, from Whitley Terrace and Iris Circle to Emmet Terrace and Milner, and roughly all points in between (see link to map at bottom of page). Information provided by the City notes that Whitley Heights residents of these twenty three sections (noted on map) are eligible to purchase permits to park within the signed-district. Only vehicles displaying decals for District 99 will be exempt from the sign restrictions whenever these signs are posted. Important: Street cleaning restrictions are still in force for all vehicles.

In order to purchase your Preferential Parking permit, Whitley Heights residents must do so in person and bring two proofs of residency (such as your driver's license, a current utility bill, a lease agreement, etc. After the initial in-person visit, all later parking renewals are handled by mail.

So, what's this going to cost me? Here's the price list (which does not represent any price hikes which may be in the works)

ANNUAL PERMIT -
$22.50 each (as of July 2008)
Renewal required yearly, every year for each permit
(3 permits maximum, per household)
Permits user to park anywhere within District 99

VISITOR PERMIT -
$15.00 each (as of July 2008)
Renewal required every 4 months, three times a year for each permit
(2 visitor permits maximum, per household)
Permits user to park only on same block as registered household

GUEST PERMIT -
$1.50 each, valid only one day, through the next morning at 6 AM
(requires 3-week lead time for purchase by mail. Can be picked up in person)
Permits user to park only on same block as registered household  (as of July 2008)

An additional note -- if you purchase a new vehicle during the year to replace a currently permitted car, the current permit does not transfer. You must purchase a replacement permit for the new car for an additional $15.00 and provide the office with shreds of the old permit from your former vehicle.

The locations which you may go to initially purchase your permits are:

West Los Angeles Service Center
9911 West Pico Blvd. B201
Los Angeles, CA 90035

Mid-Wilshire Service Center
668 S. La Fayette Park Pl.

Important Additional Note for Whitley Heights residents about Annual Permits: You must bring the vehicle registration for each vehicle for which you are purchasing an annual permit and it must be registered to your address. Otherwise, a letter from your employer confirming the license number of the vehicle and your name must be presented.
